Happy 70th birthday to former Eastern League prospect and manager Jim Essian. He played two seasons with the Reading Phillies (1972-73) and managed three seasons in the league for the the Pittsfield Cubs (1987-88) and Norwich Navigators (1996).

Essian played in the majors during 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (1973-75), Chicago White Sox (1976-77, ’81), Oakland Athletics (1978-80, ’84), Seattle Mariners (1982), and Cleveland Indians (1983). He managed the Chicago Cubs for part of the 1991 season (59-63).
