Former Eastern League prospect Al Smith was born on this date in 1928. He played in the Wilkes-Barre Indians in 1948 and '49.

Smith played in the majors for 12 seasons with the Cleveland Indians (1953-57, '64), Chicago White Sox (1958-62), and Baltimore Orioles (1963).

He died on January 3, 2002 at the age of 73.
