Long played in the majors for 10 seasons (1951, 1955-63) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Browns, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Washington Senators.
After his career as a player, he umpired for 5 years in the minor leagues.
He died January 27, 1991, at the age of 64.
