Former Eastern League prospect Sam Jones was born on this date in 1925. He pitched in 30 games for the 1950 Wilkes-Barre Indians (17-8, 2.71 ERA).
Jones played in the major leagues during 12 seasons for the Cleveland Indians (1951-52), Chicago Cubs (1955-56), St. Louis Cardinals (1957-58, '63), San Francisco Giants (1959-61), Detroit Tigers (1962) and Baltimore Orioles (1963).
He died of cancer on November 5, 1971, at the age of 45.
