Knowles spent 16 seasons in the major leagues with the Baltimore Orioles (1965), Philadelphia Phillies (1966), Washington Senators (1967-71), Oakland Athletics (1971-74), Chicago White Sox (1975-76), Texas Rangers (1977), Montreal Expos (1978), and St. Louis Cardinals (1979-80).
He appeared in the 1969 All Star game and 1973 World Series. After he retired as a player, he coached in the minor leagues for several seasons and was on the coaching staffs of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1983 and Philadelphia Phillies in 1989 and '90.
