Former Eastern League prospect Whitey Lockman was born on this date in 1926. He played for the Springfield Rifles in 1943 at the age of 16.
He played in the majors for 15 seasons with the New York Giants (1945, '47-'56, '57), St. Louis Cardinals (1956), San Franciso Giants (1958), Baltimore Orioles (1959) and Cincinnati Reds (1959-60). After his playing career Lockman managed in the minors (Texas and Pacific Coast Leagues) and the Chicago Cubs (1972-74).
Lockman died March 17, 2009 at the age of 82.
