Counsell played in the major leagues during 16 seasons for the Colorado Rockies (1995, '97), Florida Marlins (1997-99), Los Angeles Dodgers (1999), Arizona Diamondbacks (2000-03, '05-'06), and Milwaukee Brewers (2004, '07-'11).

He has been the manager for the Milwaukee for 8 seasons (2015-22).
